Youth Assessments (Youth Criminal Justice Act Section 34)

About the Program

The Youth Court has the authority to order a medical, psychological or psychiatric assessment at any stage of the Court proceedings involving a youth between the ages 12-17. The assessment is used to identify the historical and current mental health considerations of the youth and to make recommendations to the Court for medical, psychological, and psychiatric treatment plans. The assessment serves to provide the Court with guidance from mental health professionals on the youth’s status and to guide professionals in developing a plan to address the youth’s needs within the community.

At DFCC, we undertake ordered Youth Assessments supported by a multi-disciplinary team of social workers, registered psychotherapists, consultant psychologists and a consultant psychiatrist. We receive referrals for this programdirectly from the Youth Court.
